Agave Romani Plant

Agave 'Romani'

Family

Agavaceae

Native

Mexico.

Description

Agave Romani is small sized species with open, pale green rosettes that have a nice red-brown edge to the deeply-channeled leaves. As most hybrids it is quite variable in size and in colour of foliage. There are several clones available. Agave  romani is supposedly to be an old agave hybrid made thanks to Belgium agave collector Jos de Vleeshouder, between Agave filifera and Agave mitis v. albidior.

It is a is a popular dwarf variegated sport from the aforementioned cross. The new leaves emerge pale green with a mid-green border and dark burgundy-red edges. Over time the leaves fade to creamy white.

Environment

Agave Romani  need full sun and gritty soil that percolates easily. They can even do quite well when potted but use an unglazed clay pot that will allow evaporation of excess moisture.

Water needs are moderate to light depending upon the heat of the season but the Cactus should be allowed to dry out before irrigation

In growing season they benefit from the application of a granulated time release fertilizer that will provide nutrient to the plant.

Landscape Uses

Agave Romani  striking plants are wonderful when used for accent or simply to provide some all year round foliage colour .
