Albuca bracteata (pregnant onion)

Sea-onion

Family

Asparagaceae

Origin

South Africa

Description

The False Sea Onion, or Pregnant Onion, is a unique plant with a bulb-like appearance that grows above ground. Its long, semi-succulent leaves have a beautiful apple green color and often turn brown at the tips. This plant produces a stunningly long flower spike with small, delicate green and white blossoms. The real appeal of this plant lies in the formation of bulblets, which resemble tiny babies and give it its charming nickname.

Environment

Albuca flourishes in full sunlight and thrives in partial sun or under a grow light. This plant is not frost-resistant, and cold temperatures may harm its bulb. Dry and chilly conditions promote tightly curled leaves, while warm weather keeps the tips of the leaves straight and upright. Bright light is crucial for growth, but excessive heat and light can burn tissues.

The Albuca plant prefers well-drained soil and should always be potted with drainage holes. A mixture of sand and loam is ideal for its growth, and it can thrive in alkaline, acidic, and neutral soil pH levels.

Plant the bulb in a 3-4" pot with at least one drainage hole, half of the bulb exposed above the soil, and the sprout pointing upwards. For consistent growth, this plant requires regular watering, but once established, switch to light watering. Overwatering can cause bulb rot. Use an all-purpose fertilizer to feed the bulbs annually during the early spring season,

Care & Tip

Landscape Use

The ideal choice for tabletops, hanging planters, or as a delightful addition to a miniature garden where fairies can relax under its shade!
