Mexican False Heather Purple Plant

Cuphea Hyssopifolia

Family

Lythraceae

Origin

Mexico, Guatemala

Description

C. hyssopifolia is a compact, bushy spreading evergreen shrub to 45cm in height, with small oblong shaped dark green leaves resemble those of Scotch heather (genus Calluna also known by its synonym Erica) and are about 3/4 to 1 in long and 1/4 to 1/2 in wide. They are arranged alternately the length of the stems giving the plant a fern like appearance. In tropical climates small clusters of tiny light purple flowers 1cm across merge from the axils (the points where the leaf attaches to a stem) to create a show of color that lasts for much of the year.

Environment

Tolerates many soil types but requires ample moisture to become established in full sun or semi-shade.

Prefers well-drained fertile soils with frequent light fertilization. When plant becomes scraggly, tips can be pinched to incorporate vigour and to attain lush growth and more blooms.

Landscape Use

Flower borders and beds Wall-side Borders, Courtyard Gardens Patio & Container Plants
